A state leader receives 40% of all membership dues paid by members in his or her state.

The Major Causes of the inability of SME operators to pay back loan obtained include inadequate business skills to manage the fund., as a result the business fails and Incur huge debts on SME operators.

Apart from the business skills expected, the SME Loan Programme is also aimed at facilitating SME loan applications for the financial Institutions and government agencies.

One common feedback from the Bank is that many SMEs are unable to pay back money borrowed from the Banks and other financial institutions. The few that are able to meet with the target do so beyond the time frame initially stated in the terms of agreement.


Most SME have the intention of approaching Banks but don’t really know how to present their case to the Banks. Most SME operators remain unaware of the potentially growing pool of available SME funds in the economy. There is need that Governments and financial institutions realize the relevance of SME to the building and achieving the Millennium Development Goal (MDG).

There is often a gap between the SMEs expectations and the requirements of the Banks and other lending institutions.

Banks, lending agencies and other institutions should ensure that SME operators and their management team obtains training in Enterprise Management and other related fields before taking the risk to lend them fund especially the inexperienced SME operators.

We (SKIDI) are thus very pleased to see the SME industry stepping up to fill this gap.

In order to support the growth of SME sector of our economy we have been specially dedicated to help SMEs in Nigeria. We and other stakeholders in the SME industry are in a position to better understand and facilitate the financing needs of SME(s)

NATIONAL INTER CAMPUS BUSINESS QUIZ.

SME Development Centre Presents National Inter Campus Business Quiz exclusively for students from business schools and management colleges of tertiary institutions in Nigeria and other management institutes.

Business Quiz contest dedicated to test the student’s knowledge in all aspects of Business such as Operation, Marketing, Management, Finance, IT, Investment and the Stock Market, brand names and a wide range of a related topic.

It will prepare and empower them of entrepreneurship life ahead,Self Employment and keep them abreast of business and economic news.

The rounds will be held in the six geopolitical zones. The regional rounds will be held at Lagos (South –West), Port Harcourt (South South), Enugu (South East), Kano (North West) ,FCT (Abuja) (North Central) and Bauchi (North East).

The schedule and venue shall be unfolded during the preliminary rounds.
The wining teams from each regional round will qualify for the national final to be held on June 14, 2009 in Lagos.

The quiz will cover subjects ranging from business basics and fundamental, Wealth Creation, People to products, and excellence in the world of business.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE
The quiz competition guidelines are as follows:-
¯ *Open to students of Business & Management colleges of higher institutions and business Colleges and institutes.
¯ *A Team will comprise of two participants from same educational institution.
¯ *More than one team can emerge from an educational institution
¯ *The Registration fee is N5,000 per team
¯ *cheques to be made payable in the name of SKILLS & IDEAS DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVES (Bank PHB) Account No:
¯ *Participants should have their college identity cards on the day of the quiz and letters from the institution approving your studentship.
¯ *Entry forms should be attested by the concerned colleges or educational centre with a letter attached and should be dropped at the designated campus office or business location.
¯ *The quizmasters’ decision will be final

*All Prizes will be conditional.
Taxes on Prizes will be paid by the winners.

INSTRUCTIONS
Prelims: There will be a written elimination round for all contestants at each regional round.
The written prelim will be followed by the regional finals.
Regional Contests: The top three team from the written prelims will qualify for each regional final that will be held at the same venue. The winner for each regional final will move
¯ on to the June 14 national final.
¯ Team member cannot be changed after the prelims.
¯ The quizmaster’s /organizer’s decisions will be final.
¯ A team is eligible to participate in any but only one of the six locations where the quizzes are been organized
¯ No use of mobile phones during the quiz.

¯ There will be travel and accommodation facilities for each required winner for the national final.

¯ The National final winners will be awarded a cash prize of N300, 000

SMALL and Medium Enterprise SMEs play an important role in the Economy of Nigeria and other parts of Africa not only because of the numbers of the numerous establishments but also the variety of their activities.


SME(s) Contribute to rural development, as well as support large industries and serve as catalyst for innovations and adaptation.


SME(S) Can be regarded as a source of Constant renewal in commerce and industry and as well serve as a platform for competition and dynamism.


SME(S) shares the biggest part in Nigeria economy in terms of number, contribution to employment, output and investment.


Nigeria Economic growth is thus totally dependent on the `development of
SMEs in the private sector.

In Nigeria, South Africa, Egypt and other major developing African nations SME(s) has become the wellspring to strengthening national competitive advantage.


However our market research shows that SMEs are faced with challenges that hinder development potentials. They include inadequate access to capital to start or grow an enterprise, inadequate business skills to run or manage a business, fast changing technology to match business process, shortage in power supply, unavailability of large term credit from external sources and many others.

The financing problem of SMEs is the worst among these challenges.
The inadequate access to fund to start or grow sources is deeply rooted in demand and supply issues, macroeconomic foundations, and lending infrastructures of the country.


Government policy towards SMEs is insufficient to support SMEs.

For these reasons, emphasizing on SME development as a viable strategy for industrialization and economic development of the country is a key requirement.

More Small and Medium Enterprise Centre should be established to educate the general public and financial institutions to promote exchange of information, experiences and best practices in financing SMEs and promote the sector.

SME development centre or institutes should provide education and direct experience on business operations, entrepreneurial process and culture for students and tertiary institutions through their research sections in order to imbibe the right entrepreneurial spirit after tertiary education.

ESSAY COMPETITION
For Small and Medium Sized Enterprise Operators in Nigeria

ESSAY TOPIC:
"SME DEVELOPMENT! A VIABLE SRATEGY FOR
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT". DISCUSS

The competition will award Six (6) prizes to SME operators that wins. One from each geopolitical zone that includes South West, East and South; North East, West and Central .

Entries are invited from qualified SME operators for submissions.

Submission deadline is July 17 2009 the date of the announcement of winners will be Aug 21 2009 and their essays may be published in selected newspapers and publications.

Submit your essay in a MS word or PDF format only. Every essay must, in addition to the actual essay, include a 100 word abstract of the beginning of the document. Along with the submission, you need to include the following information your full name and mailing address, your telephone number and your business email, your kind of business and the sector e.g. Business Centre, Communication sector,
your Location, official address of someone we may contact on behalf of the business to verify that you are a true representative of the business.

SME operators interested to participate must ensure that the business is fully registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) (photocopies of registration need to be attached).

National strategy for encouraging the development of Small and Medium sized enterprise SMEs in Nigeria can be regarded as a panacea to the challenges facing them
A Call for the Inaugural SME Development Centre Students' Essay competition.
The competition will award three (3) undergraduates students prizes and one (1) graduate student’s prize. Entries are invited from qualified students for submissions Submission deadline is April 17th 2009 the date of the announcement of winners will be May 21 2009 and their essays may be published in selected newspapers and publications.Submit your essay in a MS word or PDF format only.
